Before you start...
Here is some information you should read first before you contribute to the wiki...

WHAT IS A WIKI?
Do you know what a wiki actually is? If not, we suggest you visit our wiki link to definition of wikis: here

WETPAINT WIKI
So, in a wiki you can navigate through content as in any hypertext. In a wiki, several people can contribute by creating new pages and editing existing pages. It is an ongoing project. Here we are using a specific wiki engine, called wetpaint. It was selected, because its navigation is simple and editing or adding pages can be done through few and simple steps.

As a newcomer to this wetpaint wiki, we suggest you take the Wetpaint orientation, which you can get to by cliking on the link (white letters on red background) on your right side bar. It is a simple orientation and gives you all the steps you need to edit and navigate in a wetpaint wiki.

The MDE-new-technologies wiki is nothing different than any other wiki when it comes to operations.

GOAL
The goal of this wiki is to create a growing collaborative environment for reporting and understanding new technologies and their use for learning, specifically learning of distance educators.

STRUCTURE
The wiki so-far has been divided into several main areas:
  • What is Web 2.0, contains several pages explaining several of the different applications, which together are denominated as web 2.0 technologies. Under this main page, you will also get several definitions of web 2.0 as a whole.
  • Learning experiences, contains several pages (and you will be adding new ones) about experiences using web 2.0 technologies. To make it a bit easier, we have already created pages that structure these experiences into using specific web 2.0 technologies.
  • How-to's, contains pages in which you get operational explanations about how to use specific applications (web 2.0 technologies of a specific vendor).
  • Glossary, contains a list of terms that might have been used to explain other main sections in the wiki. Wetpaint has a special document template for a glossary, so it makes it easy to organize information that way.
  • Other two sections were added: one - Why Do These Technologies Matter? - with resources on discussions why these resources matter for learning and for us, and another section - Web 3.0 or the semantic web - where you can find an initial discussion of the semantic web, which is sometimes called web 3.0, and promises to be a new wave in terms of web-based technologies.

HOW DO YOU START?

  • Make sure you create your profile.
  • Navigate through the wiki, just so you get a feeling for what is there and what is available.
  • You can actually search for information in this wiki.
  • If you have a contribution, look for the existing pages and see if your contribution fits. Try to use the information about the STRUCTURE given above to help you decide where you will include your contribution.
  • If what you want to contribute does not have an existing page where it can be placed, you will need to create a new page.
  • Look to the bar on your right, and you will see several options, including one that allows you to create a new page.
  • After you create a page, give it a title and define its tags, you are ready to edit the page (put content inside that page).
  • Remember that the content that you might be editing can include text, images, videos and links to external sources or even existing pages.
  • You can always contribute by editing an existing page. This can be just text editing, or additions of images, videos or further links to external resources or to information you have added in another section of the wiki.

Here are a few other resources that will help you navigate and contribute to the MDE New technologies wiki:
  • A short video by commoncrafts that explains a bit about wiki and wetpaint wikis.

  • Adding a new page in Wetpaint

  • Adding a to-do

If you have questions that are not answered in the Wetpaint orientation or through the information here, please contact (scsporto@gmail.com), and I will help and also add more useful information to this short tutorial.
